More than 150 middle schools in 47 Michigan counties have implemented the project since it began in 2004. Creating equity in flood recovery
Flooding is the leading cause of property damage and deaths in the United States — bigger than earthquakes and forest fires combined. Branko Kerkez, an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, and his students at the Digital Water Lab partnered with researchers at the Center for Social Solutions to measure, better understand and prevent flooding and its aftermath in some of the most vulnerable communities. This video explains the partnership and the work involved.

Competitions take place periodically throughout the year, with calls for art using different themes and mediums. The October contest’s theme was “Travels.” This photo was taken in Brooklyn, New York.
