    Augmented reality art exhibition

    An augmented reality art exhibition, “Traces,” from Camila Magrane, is on view at U-M’s Institute for the Humanities Gallery through Feb. 10. While viewing “Traces,” the cell phone — or a tablet provided on-site — serves as a vessel to explore the full story of the art on the gallery walls. In this video, Magrane showcases how it works by walking through the exhibition with a tablet.

    Harvesting trash for nutritionless ‘food’

    When what you harvest is trash, your crops are in season year-round and they yield overwhelming surplus. Robin Frohardt has artfully repurposed plastic trash to create and fill a 6,000-square-foot supermarket. The Plastic Bag Store, on display at the 777 Building, 777 E. Eisenhower Parkway, in Ann Arbor through Feb. 5, highlights the enduring effects of single-use plastics. In this video, Frohardt talks about the exhibit.

    Temporary rec center to open

    The Palmer Field Temporary Recreation Facility, located on the north end of Palmer Field, will serve the campus community while a new Central Campus Recreation Building is under construction. The temporary facility opens Jan. 20, with a a ribbon-cutting ceremony, gift give-a-ways and building tours as part of a grand opening celebration that begins at 11 a.m.

    Northbank Center centennial

    UM-Flint is spending the month of January celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Northbank Center, the campus’ oldest building. Originally built in 1923 as the Industrial Savings Bank headquarters, the building’s ownership changed hands at least seven times before being bought by the university in 1999.

    The Freedom Garden

    Grown from an idea cultivated by University of Michigan student Phimmasone Kym Owens, an area of U-M’s Campus Farm has been dubbed “The Freedom Garden” — a space where refugee clients can grow their own food through community gardening. This refugee-centered garden, which sits on just more than a half-acre, is a collaboration between Jewish Family Services of Washtenaw County and Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum.

    Michigan maritime

    A new law that gives the state of Michigan’s 32 ports tools to expand and grow the maritime economy started out as a community project for a handful of U-M students. The students first worked with the Port of Monroe in 2012 and over the next decade would make the case for investing in ports around the state to increase container and industrial shipments, which is expected to lead to job creation. This video explains how the students laid the groundwork for legislation and the potential future impact.

    U-M will explore “The (R)evolution of MLK” as the theme of its annual January symposium honoring civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The symposium keynote is Jan. 16, featuring a discussion with with Aletha Maybank, a physician and American Medical Association officer; Edward Buckles, a film director and producer; and Jalen Rose, philanthropist and former U-M and NBA basketball star. The Record has published a special section detailing some of the symposium events.
