    Honorary degree recommendations

    Wynton Marsalis, Mary Sue Coleman, Phil Hagerman and Dominique Morisseau, leaders in music, education, philanthropy and art, are being recommended for honorary degrees at the 2023 Spring Commencement. Marsalis will be the main commencement speaker at the April 29 ceremony at Michigan Stadium, and Coleman will address the Rackham Graduate Exercises.

    Get outside

    Teachers throughout the state of Michigan are taking part in the Dow Innovation Teacher Fellowship, a program created for K-12 teachers of all disciplines interested in teaching sustainability issues, while fostering and supporting links between schools, classrooms and communities. The School of Education’s Center for Education Design, Evaluation, and Research is a partner in the effort. This video explains U-M’s role in the program and showcases how it engages students.

    Vision 2034

    U-M community members are being asked to think boldly as part of a yearlong campuswide strategic visioning effort to imagine what the university will look like and accomplish in the next 10 years. Input to inform U-M’s future — its Vision 2034 — is being sought in several ways from students, faculty and staff on the Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campuses, including Michigan Medicine. In this video, President Santa J. Ono encourages participation and input from all corners of the university.

    Selfies with Santa

    As a prelude to the inauguration of Santa J. Ono as U-M’s 15th president on March 7, UMSocial set up a selfie booth on the Diag on March 6, where passersby could snap a fun photo with a life-sized cutout of the new president. These students were among those who joined the fun, donning various props on hand.     A focus on education

    In his monthly video message for February, President Santa J. Ono focused on education and educators, in particular those produced by U-M’s School of Education, which celebrated its centennial last year. He highlighted notable alumni, the school’s ranking worldwide for educational research, its role in producing high-quality teachers and its recent renaming as the Marsal Family School of Education.

    ‘Notorious RBG’

    This drawing of the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, by LSA junior Anusha Tekumulla, is the first-place winner in Arts at Michigan’s February drawing competition. Arts at Michigan invites the U-M community to participate in various competitions throughout the year, using different themes and mediums. Submissions are narrowed down by staff, and then the finalists are voted on by the public.

    The Drum Major

    Today is the “birthday” of the Michigan Marching Band, which gave its first public performance Feb. 22, 1897, at an annual observance of Washington’s Birthday, sponsored by the Law School. Since then, U-M students from all across campus have been part of this iconic organization. In this video, Rachel Zhang, a biomedical engineering student and the band’s 57th drum major, talks about how the engineering skills she learns in class apply to marching band.

    Protecting pollinators

    New campus housing
