Sorting recyclables

Planet Blue Student Leaders donned haz-mat attire earlier this week and waded into garbage from Mary Markley Hall to sort recyclable items from trash. They filled a large trash bin with recyclable materials that would otherwise have headed to a landfill. Part of RecycleMania, the experience helps the students in their efforts to inform and encourage stronger recycling and waste reduction among students living in residence halls.

Auto Show insights

The 2014 North American International Auto Show, running through Sunday in Detroit, features more than 500 vehicles and offers a look at the next generation of transportation. Making cars lighter

Is it possible to cut the weight of a vehicle in half? Researchers at the College of Engineering are trying to do just that — using materials such as aluminum, steel or composites. In this video, Kazuhiro Saitou, professor of mechanical engineering, discusses the effort to make vehicles lighter and consume less fuel, while retaining the structure and safety standards of today’s automobiles.

Smoke-free signage

School of Public Health students Mark Huizenga, Tiffany Huang and Stephanie Nguyen help Chief Health Officer Dr. Robert Winfield affix new decals to trash cans across campus to reinforce the message that U-M is smoke free. The no-smoking rule took effect July 1, 2011, and most faculty, staff, students and visitors have honored the ban, but Winfield says these additional reminders will help people who are confused about boundaries or may be unaware of the policy.
