Jonathan’s story

A grapefruit-sized tumor around his neck kept 3-year-old Jonathan Ssekawunde isolated in his native Uganda, unable to play with other chuldren or even go to school. But after surgery at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, a pencil-thin line across Jonathan’s neck is all that remains of the mass. This video, which features U-M otolaryngologists Dr. Marci Lesperance and Dr. Matthew Spector, tells the successful story of the boy’s treatment.

Smartphone parking?

Drivers may one day be able to find a parking space on their smartphones instead of hunting for one on the street if a new system envisioned by U-M researchers becomes reality. In this video, Romesh Saigal, professor of industrial and operations engineering, and graduate student Qi Luo, explain how radar sensors already built into many vehicles could be used to create a crowd-sourced, real-time map of parking availability.

Saving a hand

When our hands become disabled, our lives are affected in many ways, so when Robert Ruffer arrived at the U-M Health System after nearly sawing his arm off, a team of specialists went to work to save his career as a hair and makeup stylist. In this video, team leader Dr. Kagan Ozer, clinical associate professor of orthopaedic surgery, discusses the case. A second video explores Ruffer’s personal experience.

Green infrastructure

In this video, Joan Nassauer, professor of landscape architecture at the School of Natural Resources and Environment, and Palencia Mobley of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, explain how vacant homes have been replaced with “bioretention gardens” that help manage stormwater and improve neighborhood quality of life.

Candy molds

U-M researchers working with a soft silicone to study human cells were having trouble springing the soft substance from its mold without tearing it. A solution came in the form of simple candy — a mold made of sugar that could be dipped in water and melted from around the silicone. In this video, Shuichi Takayama, professor of biomedical engineering and macromolecular science and engineering, and doctoral student Joseph Labuz, explain the process.
