Reflections on MLK

As the university prepares to celebrate the Rev. Martin Luther King Day today with a variety of events that are part of the MLK Symposium, Vice Provost and Chief Diversity Officer Rob Sellers inaugurates a video blog in which he discusses the impact of the activities at U-M and chats about his own connection to the late civil rights leader.

New crash-test dummies

As the American population gets older and fatter, the crash-test dummies used to test the cars people drive are changing too. This video shows some of the new dummies, developed with input from U-M trauma experts, that are being used to help car manufacturers create safer vehicles for today’s drivers.

Collage Concert at 40

The School of Music, Theatre & Dance’s annual Collage Concert marks its 40th anniversary this year with a performance titled “A Study in Antithesis, A Celebration of Virtuosity.” This video offers a brief history of the annual event, which was launched in 1977 by the late Gustav Meier, a former professor of music. The 2017 performance pays tribute U-M’s bicentennial and to Meier, who died in May 2016. The concert begins at 8 p.m. Saturday at Hill Auditorium.

Undocumented migration project

After spending more than six years documenting the movement of undocumented migrants from Mexico to the United States through the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, Jason De León, assistant professor of anthropology, recently turned his attention to those fleeing violence and poverty in Central America. In this video, De León discusses the focus of his research and what draws him to it.

U-M has begun its yearlong bicentennial celebration with the launch of a new public service announcement video highlighting the history, future and significance of the university. Through its powerful imagery, the video illustrates noteworthy visitors, historic campus landmarks and various accomplishments of the U-M community that have significantly impacted society.

Over the course of 2017, U-M will celebrate its bicentennial, and in so doing will honor its impact on society, and the people who helped shape the institution over the last two centuries. In this video, and an email to the campus community, President Mark Schlissel introduces some of the ways in which U-M will commemorate its 200 years of achievement.

This sculpture, located on the north side of Willow Pond at Matthaei Botanical Gardens, functions as a sundial. It was created by Jon Rush, professor emeritus of art at the Penny W. The code of the heart

Computer science and engineering students at U-M partnered with visually impaired high school student India West to develop technologies that may help other blind and visually impaired people navigate the world around them. David Chesney, a lecturer in electrical engineering and computer science, leads the effort, which is featured in this video.

Center for RNA Biomedicine

The Center for RNA Biomedicine seeks to enrich U-M’s intellectual and training environment around RNA — ribonucleic acid — biomedicine. It is designed to promote and develop cross-disciplinary collaborations, and enrich the university’s intellectual and training environment around RNA biomedicine. This video looks at the center focused on the study of RNA, a major determinant of cellular life.
