Each year, The University Record profiles graduating seniors who highlight the range of experiences and people at U-M. Profiled this year are Thomas Dozeman, Giovanni Martinez, Abril Vela and D Wang Zhao.

School of Kinesiology senior finds passion in sports

From playing basketball in his driveway as a kid to working as a student manager for the U-M football team, sports always played a central role in Thomas Dozeman's life. Before transferring to U-M, the School of Kinesiology senior and Grand Rapids native played basketball for Albion College. Once at U-M, his passion for sports never wavered.

Taubman College senior finds growth at U-M

When looking back on why he decided to pursue architecture as a career, Giovanni Martinez points to an intimate family portrait based in the creative process. His father and godfather work in the construction industry. His mother is an artistic person as well, whether it be drawing or crochet. He inherited the same urge to transform products of the imagination into reality.

School of Information senior seeks tech training for all

When Abril Vela was in high school, a conscientious school counselor and a stroke of luck led Vela to her first computer programming course. Her teacher actively worked to ensure the female students in the class felt like they belonged, helping foster Vela's love for the subject. Since then, she has worked to merge her passions for education, equity and technology.

Stamps School senior seeks justice through fashion

From sizing restrictions to the unsafe spaces of the shopping experience, D Wang Zhao, a senior in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, says there are several ways the current fashion industry does not adequately serve those who are gender non-binary. Zhao has dedicated their final months at U-M confronting this inequity.

Michigan Medicine has received an "A" for its spring 2018 Hospital Safety Score from the Leapfrog Group, which measures how well health care institutions perform on a broad range of safety measures.
