Workshops will help those applying for
New Century Fund support
Proposal planning workshops for those interested in applying for funding by the President’s New Century Fund for Diversity will be held April 17 and April 18.
The New Century Fund, announced in February, provides support for projects conducted by faculty, staff or students that will advance diversity and multiculturalism on the Ann Arbor campus, especially activities that will advance the goals of the Michigan Agenda for Women and the Michigan Mandate.
Up to 10 projects will be selected, with total budgets ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 and activities not extending beyond two years.
All potential applicants are encouraged to attend one of the half-day workshops, which will help applicants design projects that will have a positive, sustainable influence on the University climate and progress toward the goals of the Agenda and Mandate in promoting:
Success and achievement of women faculty, staff and students from diverse backgrounds.
Diversity in our student, faculty and staff ranks so the University can provide a quality academic experience and working environment for all members of the campus community.
Particularly encouraged are proposals that support action or action research that enhances the University climate in order to sustain diversity. Climate issues and how they can be improved to have a positive influence on the retention and recruitment of women and minorities among staff, faculty and students should be included in project descriptions.
The President’s New Century Fund receives its resources from the Presidential Initiatives Fund (PIF), established in 1986 with a $5 million gift from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. This year, $450,000 had been designated for the New Century Fund.

Proposal planning workshopsTwo workshops for those interested in applying for funding from the President’s New Century Fund for Diversity are scheduled. “Planning/Sustaining Diversity-Related Changes in the University” will be held 9 a.m.-noon April 17 in the Anderson Room, Michigan Union, and 1-4 p.m. April 18 in the Welker Room, Michigan Union. The workshops will be led by Mark Chesler, professor of sociology and director, LS&A graduate programs, and Ruby Beale, assistant research scientist, Center for the Education of Women. The workshops will focus on:
Ways of thinking concretely about diversity and multiculturalism in higher education.
Strategies and tactics for making and sustaining changes in organizational and unit climates.
Assessment techniques that identify barriers and resources to change and that evaluate outcomes.
Participants are encouraged to bring and share preliminary proposals.
