Alcohol treatment options, couples therapy, successful aging, and women and sex are among the topics to be discussed in the University’s fourth annual Workshop Series on Critical Issues in Health Care Social Work.

Sponsored by the School of Social Work and the Health System Department of Social Work, the series features six separate day-long or half-day workshops that begin in mid-October and run through early November at the University Hospital’s Ford Amphitheater.

Scheduled workshops include:

Oct. 12: “Abstinence vs. Moderation: New Treatment Options for Alcohol Problems,” 9 a.m.-1 p.m. New moderation-based methods that emphasize self-control will be contrasted with traditional abstinence-based programs.

Oct. 17: “Couples Therapy: Current Trends in the Assessment and Treatment of Couples,” 1:30-4:30 p.m. Issues of depression and infidelity in treating marital problems will be highlighted.

Oct. 30: “Aging with Grace: A Positive Approach to Successful Aging,” 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Reducing the risk for disease and disability, and maximizing mental and physical function in old age will be discussed.

Oct. 31: “The New Frontier: Social Work Practice in Primary Care,” 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The delivery of psychosocial and mental health services within primary care settings will be explored.

Nov. 5: “Women and Sex: Life Issues,” 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Psychosexual development, relationship dilemmas and specific issues such as the impact of trauma, chronic illness and pain-related difficulties will be addressed.

Nov. 7: “The Phoenix is Rising: Medicine in the New Millenium, A New Prescription for Body, Mind and Spirit,” 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Aspects of future medicine that transcend the ills of the body and mind to include attention to the human spirit will be examined.

Half-day workshops cost $60 ($30 for students and senior citizens); day-long workshops are $99 ($45 for students and senior citizens).
