William Greer has been appointed to the newly created position of assistant vice president for research — animal program compliance oversight, in the University of Michigan Office of Research.
He comes to U-M from Pennsylvania State University where he is associate director in the Office of Research Protection. The appointment was approved Thursday by the Board of Regents and is effective June 1.
Greer will serve as director of the Animal Care and Use Office, providing leadership and management of the oversight programs for the protection of animals involved in research at the university.
In partnership with the Attending Veterinarian and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, Greer will lead the ACUO in fostering an environment of engagement, support and service to the research community.
He will work with the animal care and use committee to ensure all animal research is reviewed, approved and conducted in accordance with all appropriate international, federal and state regulations and guidelines, as well as with specific guidelines from funding agencies, institutional policies and appropriate accreditation standards.
“Laboratory animals are central to progress in research that has led to an extraordinary array of benefits to both humans and animals, and the proper care and use of these animals is critical to that success,” says S. Jack Hu, vice president for research.
“Bill Greer’s appointment is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure that U-M meets the very highest standards of excellence in laboratory animal care, and he will play a key role in helping us achieve and sustain that goal.”
Greer earned his Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology at Penn State in 1986. He has extensive experience in animal care and use programs as well as biosafety and radiation research compliance programs.
He is an active ad-hoc consultant to the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International Council and is chairman of the board of directors and the president of the IACUC Administrators Association.
