Welcome to the Record

The University Record, September 7, 1999 Welcome to The University Record , U-M’s official faculty-staff newspaper, published by News and Information Services.

The Record is published on Mondays, weekly September-April except for holiday breaks, twice a month May-July and once in August.

It can be found in racks in more than 70 campus locations, generally in building lobbies. Some departments receive copies via Campus Mail for re-distribution to their faculty and staff. If your department would like to be added to that list, give us a call, 764-0105 or send e-mail to [email protected]. We’ll need the department name, address and number of staff members. We don’t print enough copies for everyone, so please share with colleagues.

In addition, the Record is mailed to 7,000 faculty and staff retirees and those on leave via third-class mail.

The Record also appears online each week at www.umich.edu/~urecord. Readers interested in a quick look at the main articles are encouraged to join UROnline, an automatic e-mail message that includes a brief synopsis of all major articles. To join UROnline, send an e-mail message to [email protected] with the word SUBSCRIBE in the subject line. You can remove yourself from the list at any time by sending e-mail to [email protected] with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject line.

Each issue of the Record carries a number of regular features. The deadline for receipt of information submitted by U-M units or organizations for many of these columns is 5 p.m. the Tuesday preceding publication. In other words, if you want something published in the Sept. 20 issue, we must receive it by 5 p.m. Sept. 14.

Information must be in writing and can be sent via fax (764-7084), Campus Mail (412 Maynard 1399) or e-mail to [email protected].

Regular columns include:

  • The Calendar, a listing of on-campus events sponsored by U-M units or organizations, arranged by type of activity in date order and covering activities taking place beginning the day of publication and continuing through the following Wednesday.

  • Job Postings, provided by Employment Services. These include position title, employing unit, identification number and posting deadline. More complete information on open jobs is available online at the Record Web site, www.umich.edu/~urecord, or at www.umich.edu/~jobs/.

  • Applause. These short items highlight honors given by the University and outside organizations to faculty and staff that are related to their U-M appointment. All faculty and staff are encouraged to submit information for Applause.

  • Letters to the editor. The Record welcomes letters from members of the University community. Those on topics of broad University interest will be given preference for publication. Letters should be no more than 500 words in length and must be signed. The editorial staff reserves the right to reject any letter, to edit and/or condense letters for publication, to limit the number of weeks letters may be published on an issue and the number of times any one person’s viewpoint on an issue will be published. Letters may appear in small type. Organizations submitting letters must include the name and address of an appropriate officer. Letters must be received by noon Wednesday to receive consideration for publication in the next issue.

  • Research Reporter, provided by the Division of Research Development and Administration. These listings include information and application deadlines for a variety of research funding proposals. The Research Reporter newsletter appears once each month.

  • Studies Seek Subjects. These are offered to units seeking volunteers for research studies at a cost of $25 per listing per issue. Units that wish to have a listing must include Chartfield information when submitting listings.

  • Obituaries for all active and retired faculty and staff. Obituaries may come from the family, the staff or faculty member’s unit or colleagues, or a funeral home.

  • Briefings, the short items that appear on the outside column of some pages, generally provide more information on upcoming events than is possible to include in the Calendar, or they announce deadlines for submission of materials to U-M units. Other short items of interest also may appear in Briefings.

Police Beat, a report on criminal activities and a map showing the campus locations of some criminal activities, is prepared each month in conjunction with the Department of Public Safety and the Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center.

The Record carries display advertising on a contract basis for U-M units and outside organizations, with U-M units receiving a discounted rate. Publication of an advertisement does not imply endorsement of the organization or its products or services. Details about advertising are on our Web site or can be obtained by contacting any Record staff member.
