Water main project on S. Division to affect traffic for a few weeks

Topics:

The city of Ann Arbor next week is planning to begin installing a new water main on South Division Street, which will affect traffic on Division and East Jefferson streets at various times over the next three or four weeks.

The work is scheduled to be done in two phases.

Phase 1, lasting approximately two weeks, will be the construction of a new 12-inch water main at the corner of Division and Jefferson streets. During this phase, Jefferson will be closed between Division and Thompson streets.

One lane of northbound traffic on Division will be maintained, but shifted to the westernmost lane. Parking meters on the west side of Division will be bagged, possibly along with some on the east side. Access to the Thompson Street parking structure from Division will be maintained.

The W29 lot on Division at Jefferson will be closed.

Phase Two, lasting approximately two to three weeks, will reopen Jefferson Street. The work will tie in the new water main to residences on the block of Division between Jefferson and East William streets.

During the second phase, Division will be closed to through traffic between Jefferson and William. Northbound traffic will be detoured to Packard Street to Fourth Avenue to William and back to Division.  However, local traffic will still be able to access the block, including the Thompson Street parking structure.

Access to the docks at the Munger Graduate Residences and the Institute for Social Research will be coordinated with the contractor.

These updates are important. They would be significantly more intuitive and useful if they always included a digital map of the project – either embedded or via a link. When these are sent to visitors who may be coming to our department from out of town, it requires them, too, to look up the site. As a public service, a map should be part of the ‘punch list’ for notices of this kind – no map, not ready to publish. That said, keep up the good job of clear communication.
