Vincent Scully to present CAUP Wallenberg Lecture Friday

Vincent Scully, former Sterling Professor of the History of Art at Yale University and now at the University of Miami, will deliver the College of Architecture and Urban Planning’s (CAUP) annual Wallenberg Lecture at 5:30 p.m. Friday (Feb. 9) in Rackham Amphitheater.
Scully, whose lecture is titled “The Architecture of Community,” encourages design that focuses on the human aspects of life and is deeply concerned with preserving community.
Maya Lin, the designer of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., is the most widely recognized individual Scully has influenced as a scholar.
Through his writing, Scully creates parallels between architecture and human life that allow people to see more deeply into a field with which they might not otherwise be concerned. “Towns, like human life,” Scully says, “are complex, ambiguous, humane, ironic.”
CAUP Dean Robert M. Beckley says Scully “has presented to several generations of architects and planners the challenge to design with our minds and hearts as well as our eyes.”
The free, public lecture is one of two annually that honor Raoul Wallenberg, a 1935 U-M architecture graduate who rescued thousands of Jews during World War II.
This lecture was established with an endowment in 1976 to ensure that an annual lecture be offered in Wallenberg’s honor that focused attention on architecture as a humane social art.
