USB tops out

The final piece of structural steel is bolted into place on the Undergraduate Science Building (USB) Oct. 8 after a brief ceremony, which included ironworkers autographing the last I-beam. The placing of the pine tree is a centuries-old tradition in “topping out” ceremonies, which originally was done to honor the trees that provided lumber for a structure. The USB is a 140,000-square-foot facility for life sciences classrooms and teaching laboratories. It is slated to open for classes in fall 2005. It stands on a new public plaza adjacent to the Life Sciences Institute and the Life Sciences Commons.
