University of Michigan Business School’s policy statement regarding alternative scheduling

In order to ensure continued quality and staff empowerment at the University of Michigan Business School, an alternative scheduling program will be piloted for the period of approximately one y ear. Staff may request to negotiate an alter native schedule. Supervisors are strongly encouraged to seriously consider all requests and negotiate an agreeable schedule.

Staff are to be reminded that the opportunity to negotiate an alternative schedule is a privilege, not an entitlement. To that end, performance must be of acceptable quality as determined by one’s supervisor before an alternative schedule can be requested. The level of quality must be maintained or improved in order for a staff member to continue working an alternate schedule.

Schedules should be agreed upon by the work group. A change in personnel may warrant renegotiation of everyone’s schedule to ensure coverage and quality is maintained. Supervisors may choose to hire for a specific schedule, although ideally, the work group would renegotiate their schedules to maintain coverage and service. It is the decision of the supervisor to impose a probationary period for new employees before an alternative schedule will be considered.

The following parameters, in addition to those established by each unit, are necessary to ensure the quality initiative is enhanced throughout the Business School: All offices must be appropriately staffed between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Quality of customer service must be maintained or enhanced. Everyone must be available during their unit’s established core hours to cover “peak times” and to conduct meetings. Schedules must be agreed upon by the employee and their super visor and not conflict with the parameters of the unit. All work schedules must be posted and available to other staff members. Employees must work their full appointment within the constraints of Federal law.

This program operates within the guidelines as established by the University of Michigan Standard Practice Guide for permanent employees.
