United Way campaign aims for $1 million

The University kicked off its annual United Way campaign last week with a pot pie luncheon at the Michigan League. United Way volunteers from across the University joined campaign chair Maureen Hartford, vice president for student affairs, at the traditional event to celebrate the beginning of the University’s $1 million, six-week campaign.
Keynote speaker Joe Roberson, director of athletics, discussed the importance of continuing the University’s tradition of involvement with United Way. “We have been great beneficiaries of the people who went before us. We have an obligation to do the same for the next generation.”
Henry Johnson, vice president emeritus for student services, addressed questions from the volunteers concerning recent allegations of financial improprieties at the Washtenaw United Way. Johnson, a member of an independent advisory committee investigating the allegations, said that the board will have full review of Washtenaw United Way’s financial records and will present a report to the Washtenaw United Way board at the conclusion of the inquiry.
“Trust that we will have your interests and the interests of Washtenaw County at heart,” Johnson said.
The University’s campaign continues through Nov. 1.
