UMTRI, truck research unit get $1 million a year for three years

The Great Lakes Center for Truck and Transit Research at the U-M Transportation Research Institute will receive a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation in each of the next three years for continued funding of the Center.
Established in 1988, the Center is a national resource for science-based understanding of all aspects of truck transportation and related aspects of bus transit.
According to director Thomas Gillespie, the goal of the Center is to provide research leadership and develop technical expertise to serve long-term regional and national needs in heavy vehicle transportation.
In the coming year, the Center will conduct research and educational projects on topics such as motor carrier design safety, traffic signal pre-emption systems, recycled concrete pavements and standards for transportable wheelchairs.
The Center also supports graduate student research in transportation through its Great Lakes Scholars Program and provides training in Intelligent Transportation Systems through its ITS Education Program.
