U will participate in nationwide videoconference on diversity

The University is one of 200 campuses nationwide that will be part of a videoconference titled “Diversity—The Way Things Are . . . The Way Things Can Be.” Panelists include Ronald Takaki, professor of ethnic studies at the University of California, Berkeley, and author of Strangers from a Different Shore and A Different Mirror: A History of Multicultural America, and Michael Dyson, professor of communication studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, “hip-hop” intellectual and author of Between God and Gangsta Rap: Bearing Witness to Black Culture. The videoconference will be moderated by Farai Chideya, CNN political analyst and former MTV news editor.
The videoconference will be an interactive discussion of diversity with thousands of students across the country on college campuses.
The program will be divided into three portions. The first portion will be the national link with the panelists and moderator. The second portion will focus on the University and involve small group discussions about diversity at the University. The final portion will again be the national link with the panelists and moderator.
The videoconference will take place 7-10 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 13) at the Dental School’s Kellogg Auditorium. The schedule:
7-8 p.m.: National videoconference, “The Way Things Are.”
8-9 p.m.: Local discusssion on diversity at the U-M.
9-10 p.m.: National videoconference, “The Way Things Can Be.”
U-M sponsors, all part of the Division of Student Affairs, include the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Programs Office; Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs; Student Activities and Leadership; Intergroup Relations; and the Office of Community Service Learning.
National sponsors include Time Warner and Project Change, an anti-racism initiative of the Levi Strauss Foundation.
