“Welcome to Michigan,” a week-long series of programs and activities to welcome new students, will kick off Aug. 30 and continue through Sept. 7.
The New Student Convocation will be held 7-8 p.m. Sept. 2 in Hill Auditorium, followed by “Escapade!” an extravaganza at the Michigan Union featuring games, prizes, food and entertainment. New this year is “Artscapade!” 8-11 p.m. Sept. 2 at the Museum of Art, offering performances, hands-on art, games, giveaways and refreshments.
There also is a special program related to the University’s “Year of Humanities and Arts” (YoHA), called “YoRenaissance,” which will be held 1-4 p.m. Aug. 31 in the Rackham Building. Included are workshops on “Location, Location, Location,” “The Past Aro und Us,” “International Folk Dances” and “Racially Mixed . . . But Not Mixed Up.” Participants will receive YoHA yo-yos or posters.
Other Welcome to Michigan events include:
Academic programs for all students as well as some related to specific schools or colleges, and sessions on U-M Learning Communities, such as the 21st Century Program, Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program and the Residential College.
Residence hall open houses and hall-specific activities and meetings.
Information sessions on the programs and services offered on campus, including a Work-Study Job Fair, information table about the Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center and Festifall, with information on 300 student organizations, 30 area non-profit agencies and many U-M departments.
Workshops on writing support, computing at the U-M, diagnosing learning style, the library system, managing money and time management.
There also are athletic/recreational opportunities, religious activities, multicultural events, sessions for transfer students and activities for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students.
