The other U.S. institutions to make the top 20 were the University of California, Berkeley (No. 6) and the University of California, Los Angeles (No. 15).
According to Times Higher Education, the World Reputation Rankings are created using the world’s largest invitation-only academic opinion survey of experienced, published scholars, who offer their views on excellence in research and teaching within their disciplines and at institutions with which they are familiar.
The 2023 rankings were based on a survey, conducted between October 2022 and January 2023, that received nearly 40,000 responses from 166 countries.
In a different Times Higher Education global rankings list released in September, the 2024 World University Rankings, U-M ranked No. 23 in the world and No. 14 in the U.S. It was one of only three public universities in the U.S. to make the top 25 on that list, along with UC-Berkeley and UCLA.
The World University Rankings were based on 18 performance indicators that measured institutions across five areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry income.
