U-M maintains ranking among nation’s top public universities

The University of Michigan maintained its ranking as the No. 4 public university in U.S. News & World Report’s annual report of the nation’s best undergraduate colleges and universities.

The magazine released its 2017 rankings online today.

U-M was ranked No. 27 among the nation’s best national universities, up two spots from last year.

University officials noted that what matters most in choosing a school is the match between the particular interests, abilities and ambitions of each student and the specific programs, approaches and opportunities offered by a particular school.

UM-Dearborn was rated among the best regional universities in the Midwest. It was ranked at No. 40, down from No. 36 last year. It also was ranked as the No. 6 public school in the Midwest, up one spot from last year.

U.S. News also annually ranks undergraduate business and engineering programs.

The Stephen M. Ross School of Business undergraduate program again ranks No. 4 nationally. It is among the top five schools in four specialties: finance (fourth), management (first), marketing (first) and product/operations (fifth).

The College of Engineering undergraduate program maintained its No. 6 ranking nationally. In specialty rankings, engineering is among the top five in five specialty areas: aerospace engineering (third), environmental/environmental health (second), industrial/manufacturing (second), materials (fourth) and mechanical (fifth).

A peer assessment survey that recognizes universities for its strong commitment to teaching ranked U-M No. 7 nationally, up six spots from last year.

U.S. News asked top academics in a peer assessment survey to name the most innovative schools. U-M ranked No. 9, tied with Portland State University and Purdue University.

U.S. News also released rankings on the top schools that help veterans and active service members pursue an affordable college education. U-M’s Ann Arbor campus ranked No. 17, up six spots from last year.

Earlier this year, U.S. News released its graduate rankings.

U-M has 103 graduate programs ranked in the top 10 by U.S. News & World Report, placing it among the top three among all public and private institutions in the United States.
