The University of Michigan has updated a New Employee Orientation module for Ann Arbor campus staff and launched a new onboarding website for all university staff and units.
The U-M Onboarding website will provide resources — including checklists for new hires and hiring managers — to help incoming staff and hiring departments. Most of the site’s resources apply to new staff members working anywhere in the university.

The Ann Arbor Campus New Employee Orientation for Staff also has been updated and is available in an online module to be completed by new staff members on their first day of employment.
This new, asynchronous module focuses on welcoming staff to the U-M community. It is intended for regular, active, benefits-eligible staff in Ann Arbor campus units and provides:
- An introduction to the U-M mission, vision, culture and values.
- An overview of U-M policies, payroll, employee support and resources.
- Information about university benefits and enrollment.
- Career and professional development resources and the next steps in the onboarding journey.
Created by Organizational Learning, Staff HR Services, Benefits, and Information and Technology Services, the orientation program can be supplemented with additional orientation materials provided by hiring units.
“The university is a large place, and it is important for new staff members to have all of the information they need for a successful start,” said Brian Cole, associate director in Organizational Learning and the program steward for both projects.“In fact, new employees who participate in such programs tend to be 70% more likely to remain with their organizations for more than three years.
“The U-M Onboarding resources and Ann Arbor campus New Employee Orientation module will help new staff navigate this institution effectively.”
Organizational Learning is hosting orientation sessions for hiring units. U-M Onboarding: Updated Tools to Enhance the Onboarding Experience sessions are available Feb. 27, March 11 and 26, and April 1.
