The U-M-Dearborn has been selected as one of two national sites for a pilot project of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), “Campus Initiative for Equity.”
The project has three initial goals:
—To further develop a climate of gender equity and fairness on campus for students, faculty and staff.
—To develop initiatives in seven focus groups.
—To expand existing mentoring networks among women on campus and in the community.
Sponsors say the campus-based program helps “bridge the isolation gap” through development of a professional/academic support network for women.
The program’s first meeting, 2–4:30 p.m. Oct. 8 in the Music Room, Fair Lane, will include an address on gender equity by Jacquelynne S. Eccles on “Bringing Females to Math and Science.”
Registration for the free, public program is recommended but not required. Participants will be asked to select one focus group in which they would like to be involved, and are welcome to suggest others.
The first groups will discuss issues related to tenure; tenure-track faculty; professional/administrative, clerical and technical staff; students; climate and culture; and campus safety for women.
Other program participants are Lynne Aldrich, vice chancellor for institutional advancement, who will discuss Dearborn’s vision and goals with respect to equity; Susan Reddy-Butler, president, AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund Board of Directors; and Josephine Altstetter, AAUW Dearborn branch.
