The University of Michigan maintained its spot as the No. 18 university in the world, according to the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings released Feb. 17.
The rankings are determined using data collected from the world’s largest invitation-only academic opinion survey — with responses from more than 55,000 scholars globally — assessing prestige in the areas of research and teaching.

U-M is one of three public institutions in the U.S. in the top 20. The others are University of California, Berkeley at No. 6 and U-C, Los Angeles at No. 15. The United States had 71 institutions on the list, among the 300 institutions ranked.
Now in its 14th year, the 2025 edition of the ranking is based on a revamped methodology consisting of three core pillars with a total of six performance indicators to provide a more robust assessment of reputation. Those core pillars include:
- Vote counts, the number of votes for research and teaching.
- Pairwise comparison, which invites voters to consider a wider range of institutions for research and teaching.
- Voter diversity, which rewards universities that receive votes from a wide range of territories and subject areas in research and teaching.
Times Higher Education’s more comprehensive World University Rankings were released in fall 2024 and U-M ranked No. 22 on that list among 2,092 universities.
