The University of Michigan is ranked as the 14th top university in the world, up five spots from last year, according to the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings released Wednesday.

The 2016 World Reputation Rankings are based on the results from an invitation-only survey of 10,323 academics in 133 countries. Institutions are ranked according to their data on their reputation for research and teaching.
U-M is one of three public institutions in the U.S. in the top 20. The others are University of California, Berkeley (6) and U-C, Los Angeles (13). The United States has 43 institutions on the list.
The survey was distributed in 15 languages this year.
“The University of Michigan is increasingly seen as an elite within an elite,” says Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education rankings. “The top 100 represents just 0.5 percent of the world’s 20,000 higher education institutions. … It is a remarkable achievement to make the top 15.”
The Times Higher Education ranking is one of two released annually by the organization. The more comprehensive World University Rankings were released in fall 2015.
The annual list ranks the top 400 universities and is based on 13 performance indicators separated into five categories: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook. U-M ranked No. 21 on that list.
