U hosting regional Chicano studies conference this week
The U-M will host the National Association of Chicano Studies regional conference “RAZA in the Midwest: New Mapping for Pan-Latino Struggles” this Friday and Saturday in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the University’s Latina/o Studies Program.
The two-day conference marks the second time in its 13-year history that the conference has been held in Michigan. The conference theme, note organizers, “reflects our interest in exploring the ways in which Chicano studies can be more responsive to changes within larger Latino communities.” Issues facing those communities are those relating to gender, sexuality, nationality and identity, they say.
Organizers expect more than 200 participants from as far away as Texas and Arizona to attend.
