Traditional Orchestra of China tour features piece by U-M composer

When the National Traditional Orchestra of China makes its Ann Arbor debut at 8 p.m. Wed. (Feb. 26) in Hill Auditorium, the program will include a composition by Bright Sheng, assistant professor of composition and music theory.
Written for cello and orchestra of traditional Chinese instruments, Sheng’s evocative Spring Dreams consists of two movements, Midnight Bells and Spring Opera. The composer dedicated the composition to cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who premiered it Feb. 19 in Worcester, Mass. Ma selected the critically acclaimed young cellist Hai-Ye Ni to play the cello solos.
The concert is one of the University Musical Society’s (UMS) World Tour: Tradition of Asia series, and is presented with the support of Herbert Sloan. Tickets, $14-28, are available at the UMS Box Office, 764-2538.
