The University Record, September 5 , 1995 Today (Sept. 5) marks the official opening of ticket sales for individual performances presented by the University Musical Society (UMS) in its 1995–96 season.
Season highlights include the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Seiji Ozawa, conductor; Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra Nonet; conductor Leonard Slatkin on his final tour as music director of the St. Louis Symphony; a new mounting of Gluck‘s Orfeo ed Eurdice by the Mark Morris Dance Group and Christopher Hogwood‘s Handel and Haydn Society Orchestra and Chorus; the Ann Arbor debut of the Guthrie Theater of Minneapolis; an opening night recital by international opera sensation Cecilia Bartoli; and the final three installments in Garrick Ohlsson‘s two-season expedition of the complete solo piano music of Frederic Chopin.
The season also includes the return of such UMS favorites as the UMS Choral Union‘s 117th performance of Handel‘s Messiah, the Canadian Brass, the King‘s Singers, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, sitarist Ravi Shankar, the Boys Choir of Harlem and the Julliard String Quartet in its 50th anniversary season.
