Three LSA staff recognized for service
By Rebecca A. Doyle
Three staff members received the LS&A Staff Award for Excellence in October. Each received a monetary award and a plaque for their service to the University and LS&A, which was described as beyond job responsibilities, high quality and enthusiastic.
David Bay, photographer in the Department of Biology, has been at the U-M for 27 years. He was chosen for his service to both faculty and students in the department, and for his genuine interest in helping others “put their best foot forward. He is very knowledgeable in the field of photography and can provide valuable tips and advice to faculty and students,” wrote his nominators.
“[Your colleagues] recognize that their last-minute requests place an extra burden and added pressure on your very demanding schedule, and report that you are always enthusiastic, understanding and extremely hardworking,” LS&A Dean Patricia Gurin said in presenting Bay’s award.
Mary Heller, academic services secretary in the Department of Communication Studies, was nominated by her colleagues for her “warmth and caring attitude that has carried the department through many low times.” Heller has worked in the department for 11 years, and is known for home-baked cakes and muffins, flower arrangements and her caring for her “work family.”
“She is a selfless and tireless citizen of the department, whose concern for others—faculty, students and visitors—is visibly displayed every day,” noted her colleagues in her nomination.
Michael Kitson, computer systems consultant in the Department of Chemistry, was nominated by colleagues “who report that you have an unusual combination of skills that allow you to problem-solve using both hardware and software in such a manner that people feel respected and able to understand solutions,” Gurin said in presenting the award to Kitson.
Kitson has been in the department for about 10 years, and “is a consummate team player,” noted his co-workers in nominating him. “He approaches the job with an unparalleled desire to please the faculty and staff [he serves].”
LS&A staff awards for excellence are presented annually.
