Three at Medical School appointed to named professorships
Three Medical School faculty were appointed to named professorships by the Regents at their April meeting.
Joseph C. Fantone III, professor of pathology, will hold the Godfrey D. Stobbe Professorship of Pathology Education. Aileen B. Sedman, associate professor of pediatrics and communicable diseases, will be the Robert C. Kelsch Collegiate Professor of Pediatric Nephrology. Sharon W. Weiss, professor of pathology, will hold the A. James French Professorship of Diagnostic Pathology.
“Dr. Fantone’s area of investigative interest is in immunopathology research,” said Giles G. Bole, dean of the Medical School. “His expertise is well recognized, and he has served on numerous study section and site visit teams for the National Institutes of Health. In addition, his reputation is further supported through his membership on several editorial boards, including Laboratory Investigation and Biological Signals.
“In addition to his outstanding research program, Dr. Fantone is actively involved in the administrative and educational programs of the Medical School and in the Department of Pathology.” Fantone joined the U-M in 1980.
“Dr. Sedman is a remarkable clinical scholar, educator and physician who has contributed greatly to the care of infants, children and adolescents with renal disease,” Bole noted. “Her observations about the effect of aluminum toxicity in childhood led to the reformulation of dialysis fluids and significant changes in the use of phosphate-binding drugs in the treatment of children with renal failure.
“She has published important epidemiologic work on polycystic kidney disease in children, and her clinical studies have had a profound effect on the incidence of metabolic bone disease in patients with renal failure and encephalopathy.” She joined the faculty in 1984.
“Dr. Weiss is one of the leading experts in the difficult diagnostic area of soft tissue tumors,” Bole said. “She is internationally recognized in this field and, since 1988, has served as head of the World Health Organization International Reference Centre for the Histological Classification of Soft Tissue Tumours.
“Currently, she is chief editor of the most authoritative textbook dealing with soft tissue tumors. Dr. Weiss’ expertise is further recognized through her membership on several prominent editorial boards, including the American Journal of Surgical Pathology, American Journal of Clinical Pathology and International Surgical Pathology.” She joined the U-M in 1989.
