Sustainability Town Hall to focus on efforts to cut campus waste

The Office of Campus Sustainability will host a town hall Oct. 8 to share an update on the university’s sustainability goals, with a focus on campus efforts to address waste reduction.

The event is open to students, faculty and staff, and will occur from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Gallery Room of the Hatcher Graduate Library.

The town hall will include brief presentations exploring efforts to reduce campus waste, followed by a Q-and-A session and an opportunity for attendees to network with others interested in sustainability.

“The town hall will provide an interactive forum to share information on current composting efforts as well as several waste-reduction programs on the horizon,” says Andy Berki, manager of OCS. “Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate with ideas and questions.”

With a particular spotlight on food-waste reduction, the feature presentation will cover efforts to reduce food waste in U-M dining facilities, and will be given by Keith Soster, the Michigan Dining director of student engagement.

Other speakers providing updates on the university’s waste-reduction projects include Anya Dale, sustainability representative in OCS, and Sarah Perry from the Waste Reduction and Recycling Office. In addition, Planet Blue Ambassador Program Coordinator Nicole Berg will discuss that program.

The event will include light refreshments from Michigan Dining and will focus on local and seasonal food.

After the presentations, attendees will be able to visit information booths for progress updates on the 2025 presidential sustainability goals, and to connect with one another to share ideas on other sustainability efforts.
