Sullivan to patrol Olympic waters
James R. Sullivan, security officer in the Department of Public Safety, will be working as a volunteer in security at the 1996 Olympic kayaking races on the Ocoee River in Tennessee this summer. Sullivan’s 11 years experience as a kayaker and 16 ye ars at the U-M in crime prevention and community relations make him a valuable asset for olympic event coordinators.
He also volunteered at the World Whitewater Championships in 1989 and the 1992 Olympic trials in Maryland.
He takes his experience and expertise to Tennessee in July to help provide security for an estimated crowd of 100,000 who will attend the three-day event.
Sullivan hopes to renew friendships with the athletes he met in the 1992 trials. Already possessing the autographs and pictures of some of the best known kayakers in the world, he looks ahead to the Olympics as a chance to make more memories.
For Sullivan, his license plate foreshadows his once-in-a-lifetime experience at the Ocoee.
It reads, “BIG H2O.”
