Students staff take to the streets in Dearborn to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Hundreds of students, faculty and staff members at U-M-Dearborn and three other Detroit-area universities and colleges will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. by volunteering at human service agencies and schools on the national holiday marking his birth, Jan. 20.
With the Detroit College of Business, Henry Ford Community College and University of Detroit Mercy, the U-M-Dearborn is working with United Way Community Services to plan the volunteer activities.
The initiative was launched four years ago by the U-M-Dearborn and United Way. Services provided have included painting, cleaning and renovating schools and other facilities; tutoring; supervised art and recreation programs; and coordination of activities for senior citizens at dozens of area agencies on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Chancellor James C. Renick calls the collaborative effort “an excellent way for us to emulate the example set by Dr. King throughout his life, and to connect the energy and skills of our campuses with the needs of this region.”
Volunteers will work at Salina Elementary School in Dearborn, the Detroit Rescue Mission, Detroit’s Coalition on Temporary Shelter, the ARC of Northwest in Redford and a dozen other facilities.
