Students encourage faculty, staff to go ‘Into the Streets’

Faculty and staff are invited to participate in this year’s “Into the Streets” pro-ject on Oct. 30.

A nationwide program, “Into the Streets” offers opportunities to participate in one day of community service, such as serving meals in a soup kitchen, working in a homeless shelter, rehabilitating abandoned houses, or cleaning a park or a stream.

Although it was originally a student project, leaders now would like to involve all members of the University community, say student co-chairs Carey Bohjanen, LS&A junior, and Jon Nash, School of Natural Resources and Environment junior.

According to Bohjanen and Nash, the day of community service seeks to:

—Meet critical needs facing the community.

—Bring together faculty, staff and students for mutual learning outside the classroom.

—Involve the University in the community of which it is a part.

—Provide a model of leadership for colleges and universities nationwide.

“Participation in community service is more urgent than ever,” the co-chairs note in a letter to members of the University community, “and we encourage you to join us for one day—starting in the morning and finishing in the afternoon—in this exciting national movement. Orientation and reflection are integral components and enable participants to learn from the experience,” they add.

Also participating in planning the

U-M’s participation in “Into the Streets” are Maureen A. Hartford, vice president for student affairs; Barry N. Checkoway, professor of social work and of urban, technological and environmental planning; and Judith Cawhorn of the SOS Community Crisis Center.
