Musical evening at Clements
President Theodore Roosevelt (a.k.a. Paul Stillman) will be joined by singer Joan Morris and her School of Music students at the Clements Library at 7:30 p.m. March 26 for ‘A Man, A Plan, A Canal,’ a musical evening based on the building of the Panama Canal. Popular songs of 1903–15, pieces by Irving Berlin and George M. Cohen and rags by Scott Joplin will be interspersed by Stillman’s ‘lively wit and bombastic, turn-of-the-century political wisdom.’ The Clements in large part owes its existence to the Panama Canal project. William L. Clements, a U-M graduate, designed and manufactured cranes and steam shovels and the project created an unprecedented need for such equipment. The business provided him with the extra personal income needed to put together one of the greatest collections of Americana in the world, which he donated to the U-M.
