In April and May 1958, President Harlan Hatcher headed an educational mission to the Soviet Union, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and the Ford Foundation. The mission returned, impressed with the support the Soviet Union was giving to higher education. Hatcher said, “The Soviet nation has seen with perfect clarity that (education) is the secret of our greatness.”
