A presentation by Suzanne Pharr, author of Homophobia: A Weapon of Sexism, will open the University’s Ninth Annual Sexual Assault Awareness Week, which is presented by the Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center (SAPAC).
Pharr will speak at 7 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 24) in Rackham Auditorium on the ways in which the conservative political movement is working to undermine the women’s movement; women’s reproductive freedom; and the rights of gay men, lesbians, bisexuals and people of color. Her presentation is co-sponsored by the Lesbian-Gay Male Programs Office.

Oct. 26, 7 p.m., Stockwell Blue Lounge, Self Defense Workshop: For Women Only, conducted by Joyce Dorado and Vicki Banyard. Participants will be taught basic moves and tactics to protect themselves in threatening situations. Pre-registration and a $5 donation are required.

Oct. 28, 7:30–10:30 p.m., Ballroom, Michigan Union, Seventh Annual Speakout on Sexual Violence. “This annual event is a celebration of the power and strength of survivors of sexual violence,” say sponsors. “Survivors have an opportunity to break the silence so often imposed on them and openly discuss their experiences.” Both public and anonymous speaking are available.
Oct. 29, noon, South Quad West Lounge, Friends Helping Friends brown-bag lunch. SAPAC counselor Kata Issari describes the healing process for survivors of sexual assault and discusses common issues of concern for their partners and friends.
