“Credentials and Competencies for Child Welfare Best Practice: A Topic for Serious Debate, Discussion, and Timely Decisions” will be examined during the Fedele F. and Iris M.
Fauri Memorial Lecture.
This lecture will address the transformation of Michigan’s child welfare workforce. Presenters will speak to the national debate about whether a social work degree is the appropriate degree for a child welfare worker, and they also will provide perspectives on what child welfare workers need to know.
The lecture will take place at 3 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Educational Conference Center (Room 1840), School of Social Work.
This session will address cultural humility as an approach to training workers to address the needs of diverse populations in child welfare, trauma-focused interventions in child welfare, and children and families of color in the child welfare system.
Two keynote speakers are scheduled for the event:
• Joan Zlotnik, executive director, Institute for the Advancement of Social Work Research, who will discuss “Social work education and child welfare practice: A national debate about the relevance to social work.”
• Carol Siemon, director, Child Welfare Training Institute, will speak on “What skills and knowledge do schools of social work need to teach potential child welfare workers so they are adequately prepared? A view from the field.”
A panel discussion also will feature Kathleen Coulborn Faller, professor of social work; Robert Ortega, associate professor of social work; James Henry, professor of social work, Western Michigan University; Gary Anderson, director of the School of Social Work, Michigan State University; and Cassandra Bowers, assistant clinical professor of Social Work, Wayne State University.
Those attending the event can earn 2.5 continuing education units hours in social work.
The Fedele F. and Iris M. Fauri Memorial Lecture Series on child welfare is presented annually in recognition of former Dean and Vice President Fedele F. Fauri and his wife. His leadership and accomplishments in child welfare spanned nearly 50 years.
