Workshops on student depression, school violence, meeting needs of gay & lesbian students

Treating student depression, dealing with school violence and meeting the needs of gay and lesbian students are among the topics to be addressed in the School of Social Work’s continuing educat ion spring workshop series.
Designed for school social workers and professional youth counselors, the six day-long workshops begin in mid -March and run through late April. They are:
March 14: “Depression in Students: Recognition, Management and Treatment,” 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Michigan League Henderson Room. Suicidal student, school management of depressed students, communication with families and school responses to student bereavement.
March 18: “Addressing the Needs of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Youth in Schools,” 9 a.m. –4:30 p.m., Michigan Union. Challenges facing homosexual youth and response interventions .
March 28: “Issues of Confidentiality, Ethics and Compliance with Statutory Duties,” 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Michigan League Henderson Room. Confidentiality, social worker-client privilege, duty to report neglect or abuse, release of records, social worker ethics and parental visitation rights.
April 15: “Clinical Applications of Expressive Therapies in Public and Private Schools: An Experiential Workshop,” 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Michigan League Hussey Room. Verbal and nonverbal therapeutic interventions utilizing expressive therapies—art, movement, music, poetry—in working with children and adolescents.
April 19: “When the Workplace is a Hurt Place,” 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Michigan League Henderson Room. Work place issues of self-esteem, burnout, boundaries and responsibility associated with working in a co-dependent setting.
April 24: “School Violence: Rising to Meet the Challenge,” 9 a.m.–4:30 p.m., Michigan League Henderson Room. The role of the school as a social system in regulating violence and creating a nonviolent school culture, violence prevention strategies and developing site-specific school safety plans.
