Trying to clean and fix up any other time of the year is nearly impossible, says Building Services Manager Nathan Norman, since the area is open to and used by students 24 hours a day.
In addition to the cleanup, the area’s four classrooms were painted, re-carpeted and furnished with new desks and chairs, and the entry to the facility was re-carpeted. Getting so much done in so little time, Norman says, is a real challenge, requiring coordination and cooperation from all the units involved, including Interior Design, Building Services Customer Response Team, Moving and Trucking, and University electricians and painters. DPS staff honored
James R. Sullivan, below, received the Director’s Citation at the recent annual awards ceremony held by the Department of Public Safety. Sullivan was honored for his work with children involving crime prevention and safety over the past 6 years.
Community awards were presented to Sam Rochon, Howard N. Amrhein, Nick Dimitroff and Robert Spence for their assistance fighting the electrical fire Aug. 2 that claimed the life of U-M electrician William Polliey, and to Travis M. Lower, a U-M student employed by State Security Services Inc., for his assistance in locating a suspect in a homicide investigation June 5.
A Crime Prevention Award was presented to West Side Book Shop owner Jay Platt for his help in identifying and recovering rare law books that belonged to the U-M. Loss Prevention awards were earned by John Keedy and Sally Smith, College of Engineering, for their assistance in setting up college-wide fire drills and contributing to the safety of the community.
Letters of Commendation were presented to citizens Christina Gonzales, Joyoti Saha, A. Wayne Burkhardt, Aaron Small, Christopher Kojiro, Jay Pike, Sheryl Renee Mohr, Robert Moenart, Paula Mitchell and Diane Winter, and to DPS personnel Jesse Lewit, Melissa Overton, Chris Carelli and Eric Dergis.
The Lifesaving Citation was awarded to Pat Alessi for administering CPR to a victim at Wolverine Tower Jan. 12, saving the person’s life. Jesse Lewit, Melissa Overton, Brent Carriveau and Stacy Richmond received the Director’s Citation for their program to train department personnel in the use of automated external defibrillators in lifesaving efforts.
The Unit Citation for Professional Excellence was awarded to Robert Neumann, Jesse Lewit, Stacy Richmond, Gina Cimo and Pittsfield Township Officer James Wickman. A Professional Excellence Citation was awarded to Kurt Kohtz and to Brent Carriveau for their efforts to resuscitate an infant at Ronald McDonald House. Photo by Rebecca A. Doyle
CAAS gallery named for Lockard
Jon Onye Lockard (third from left) followed musicians and led a celebratory crowd through the gallery in the Center for Afroamerican and African Studies that both bears his name and displays his art. Lockard, adjunct lecturer in Afroamerican and African studies, was named in 1998 to the committee that will determine the design of the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial in Washington, D.C., and continues to teach and inspire students. The Jon Onye Lockard Galleria of Fine Arts will be open 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Fri on the second floor, West Hall. Lockard’s works will be displayed through the end of March. Photo by Rebecca A. Doyle
