Seven from U-M receive Guggenheim Fellowships
Seven U-M faculty members have received Guggenheim Fellowships in the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation’s seventy-first annual competition. They are among 152 artists, scholars and scientists nationally, with awards totaling $4,272,000.
Guggenheim Fellows are appointed on the basis of unusually distinguished achievement in the past and exceptional promise for future accomplishment. A total of 72 institutions are represented by one or more fellows, and a large number are not associated with academic institutions.
The following are U-M Fellows and the focus of their research:
• Ruth Behar, professor of anthropology and faculty associate of programs in Women’s Studies and Latina/Latino Studies, the sexual politics of the Cuban revolution.
• E. Valentine Daniel, professor of anthropology, the anthropology of Sri Lankan violence.
• Yuri Gurevich, professor of computer science, foundational issues in computer science.
• Raoul Kopelman, the Kasimir Fajans Professor of Chemistry, Physics, and Applied Physics, the molecular lens.
• Bruce Mannheim, associate professor of anthropology, language, nationality and rebellion in southern Peru.
• Brinkley Messick, associate professor of anthropology, Shari’a law in an Islamic state.
• Thylias Moss, associate professor of English, poetry.
