SERVICE AWARDS

Editor’s Note: Included in this issue are names of all U-M staff members who were honored in November for 20 and 30 years of service. Featured are some of the staff who served at the University for 40 years. The balance of 40-year staff members and a listing of all staff who were honored for 10 years of service will appear in the Dec. 17 issue of the Record.

Joseph Moffatt, staging and lighting supervisor, began working for the U-M Television Center in 1956 when it was located on Maynard St. in the building currently occupied by the sports bar Scorekeepers.

‘There were no commercially available color TVs back then,’ Moffatt says. ‘People were excited about TV just like they are about computers and the Internet today.’

Moffatt worked as a camera operator, helping to produce educational programming starring U-M faculty members. ‘You name the discipl ine, we did it—music, dance, history.’ These programs were then shown at stations around the country.

Moffatt currently is involved with teaching students his craft as part of LS&A Media Services, but he will be retiring Jan. 2. He hopes to spend hi s time traveling and listenting to classical music. ‘I guess you could call me an audiophile,’ he says.

 

James Benn started his career at the University at University Hospitals in 1956, in the plumbing and heating department. He moved to Central Campus in 1972, and ‘I have been ever since,’ he says. Benn plans to retire this year or by spring, and s pend some time traveling to a warmer climate.

‘I went on a cruise for the first time last year, and I liked it,’ he says. ‘We’re going to leave in April for a trip to western Mexico.’

Benn, whose wife retired from the University two years ago, sa ys he will miss all the people he worked with, but doesn’t plan to be too much a stranger to his friends in plumbing and heating.

 

Nancy S. Garneau, administrative manager in the Department of Epidemiology, School of Public Health, came to the University on Apr. 1, 1956, as a clerk typist in the security office. She held various positions through the years and has been with t he Department of Epidemiology since 1987.

Working for the department has been gratifying, Garneau says, ‘because it’s in the field of medicine and I get to observe such strides being made toward cures for illnesses including flu viruses, AIDS, breast cancer and prostate cancer.’ A bonus: she has been privileged to meet medical luminaries such as polio vaccine developer Jonas Salk.

Garneau says she has no immediate plans for retirement. ‘I’m still going strong,’ she says. ‘I have too much to do before I give in to that fixed income.’ Among those things: craft woodworking and off-road racing with her husband. The Garneaus own a modified Jeep off-road race car and have participated in organized ‘sand drags’ (off-road drag races) for the past 1 3 years. It’s a family hobby: Garneau’s daughter and son and their spouses race, too.

 

Marshall Carr, a transit coach operator since 1985, says he truly enjoys his job because of the people he has met over the years. ‘I really like meeting people from all walks of life,’ he says. ‘I get to meet students from all over the world.’ In addition, he has transported many of the athletic teams to and from events.

Carr spent his first 28 years at the University’s Medical Center, first as an orderly, then supervising a number of different units at the center.

When he isn’t driving his N orthwood route, Carr spends time bass fishing and hiking in the upper Peninsula. ‘I love the uncluttered areas—the backwoods lakes and rivers,’ he says. ‘It’s nice to get away from all the noise.’
