Series on research ethics begins today with program on ‘Responsibility in Research’
The 1996-97 Research Responsibility Program (RRP), a series of seminars that considers ethical issues related to research, begins this week with a program by Nicholas Steneck, professor of history. “Introduction to Responsibility in Research” will be offered at two separate times, 4-6 p.m. today (Sept. 17) in Room 6319 Medical Science Building I and 7-9 p.m. Sept. 25 in Room 1640, Chemistry Building. The seminars are offered twice to accommodate different schedules.
The RRP, sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research and the Rackham School of Graduate Studies, cover topics mandated by the National Institutes for Health (NIH) and background information useful for further exploration of the topics. Sponsors say the programs will help faculty, students and staff learn more about issues relating to the responsible conduct and administration of research.
National Institutes for Health training grant directors may elect to incorporate one or more of the sessions into required programs of instruction for trainees. New faculty and staff may find the sessions a useful orientation to specific research problems. Graduate students will learn about the practices and standards expected of professionals entering research-oriented careers.
Upcoming programs include “Data Stewardship, Access and Authorship,” “Responsible Data Management Practices,” “Conflict of Interest,” “Protections for Human and Animal Subjects of Research,” and “Laboratory Safety.” The free programs are open to all members of the University community, but prior registration is encouraged to ensure that sufficient copies of materials are available.
