Senate Fiscal Agency holds retreat in Ann Arbor

 By Jane R. Elgass

State Fiscal AgencyThe Senate Fiscal Agency held a retreat in Ann Arbor Oct. 21–22, hosted by the Office of the Vice President for Government Relations.

The two-day program included presentations by a number of U-M faculty and administrators, area K-12 schools officials, and city and county officials; a tour of the Media Union; and a bus tour of campus and the surrounding community.

“We were pleased to host 28 members of the Senate Fiscal Agency,” said Cynthia Wilbanks, vice president for government relations. “We had an opportunity to expose these fiscal and policy analysts to a broad spectrum of activities at the University, including technology transfer, undergraduate programs, state outreach and Health System initiatives.

“Time also was devoted to better understanding the challenges of town-gown relationships, economic development and land use planning in Washtenaw County, and the status of K-12 education financing since the 1994 reforms,” she said.

“It is important for us to be able to communicate on a number of levels with these important decision-makers in Lansing who support members of the state Senate in their policy analysis and appropriations decision-making. From that standpoint,” Wilbanks added, “the retreat was an indeal opportunity.”
