Search underway for VP for research and innovation

President Santa J. Ono has appointed a 16-member committee of faculty and staff from the Ann Arbor, Flint and Dearborn campuses to assist with the search for the University of Michigan’s next vice president for research and innovation.

Reporting to the president, the vice president for research and innovation is responsible for maintaining excellence and integrity across U-M’s $2.04 billion research enterprise.

Stephen Forrest, an internationally recognized inventor and professor of electrical engineering, computer science and physics, will chair the committee charged with conducting a national search and developing an unranked list of candidates for the president to consider.

The committee chair and members were selected from nearly 600 nominations from the Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campuses submitted to the President’s Office in October.

Arthur Lupia is the university’s interim vice president for research and innovation following the departure of Rebecca Cunningham, who left the university in March to become president at the University of Minnesota.

An external search firm, Park Square Executive Search, has been hired to support the university in the search. Devon Redmond, project manager in the Office of the President, will serve as the president’s liaison to the search.
