President Santa J. Ono has appointed a 17-member advisory committee to assist in the search for the University of Michigan’s next dean of the Medical School.

Laurie K. McCauley, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, and David Miller, president of U-M Health and executive vice dean of clinical affairs at the Medical School, will co-chair the committee, which includes faculty, staff and students.

The next dean will succeed Marschall S. Runge, who will retire in June after serving as dean of the Medical School since January 2016, and as executive vice president for medical affairs and Michigan Medicine CEO since March 2015.

Miller will succeed Runge as executive vice president for medical affairs and Michigan Medicine CEO, effective July 1.

“The dean role is a critical role in our infrastructure positioned to help shape the future of our medical school, fostering innovation, while upholding our core values,” Ono said in an email to committee members. “I am excited to undertake this important search to continue U-M’s tradition of outstanding educational leadership.”

In addition to McCauley and Miller, the committee includes:

• Lindsay Admon, associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, Medical School; and representing the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs.
• Huda Akil, Gardner C. Quarton Distinguished University Professor of Neurosciences, Gardner C. Quarton Collegiate Professor of Neurosciences in the Molecular and Behavioral Neurosciences Institute, professor of psychiatry and research professor, Michigan Neuroscience Institute, Medical School.
• Anthony Antonellis, James V. Neel Collegiate Professor of Human Genetics, professor and chair of human genetics, and professor of neurology, Medical School.

• Mike Johns, U-M Health board representative; professor in the schools of Medicine and Public Health and executive vice president for health affairs emeritus at Emory University; and president, chief executive officer, and chairman of the board emeritus of Emory Healthcare.
• Erika Newman, associate professor of surgery, section head for pediatric surgery and Michael W. Mulholland M.D. Ph.D. Professor of Surgery, Medical School; and associate director for cancer health equity, Rogel Cancer Center.
• Oluwaferanmi Okanlami, director of Student Accessibility and Accommodation Services, Student Life; and assistant professor of family medicine, of physical medicine and rehabilitation, of urology and of orthopedic surgery, Michigan Medicine.

The committee conducted its first meeting Dec. 11. Isaacson, Miller, a national search firm, is assisting with the search.
