Search begins for top medical executive; committee named

The Office of the President has appointed a search advisory committee for the next executive vice president for medical affairs and is seeking nominations and applications for the position.

Dr. Paul Lee, director of the Kellogg Eye Center and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Medical School, will chair the committee. The executive search firm Russell Reynolds Associates with Ilene H. Nagel as lead partner has been retained to assist with this search.

The search is being undertaken to replace Dr. Ora Pescovitz, who did not seek reappointment to the position. Other members of the search advisory committee include:

• Dr. John Ayanian, Alice Hamilton Collegiate Professor of Medicine, Medical School, and director of the Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation.

• Tom Buchmueller, Waldo O. Hildebrand Professor of Risk Management and Insurance; professor of business economics and public policy, and chair of the Department of Business Economics and Public Policy, Stephen M. Ross School of Business.

• Sally Camper, James V. Neel Collegiate Professor of Human Genetics and chair of the Department of Human Genetics, Medical School.

• Dr. John Carethers, J. G. Searle Professor of Internal Medicine, professor of internal medicine and chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, Medical School.

• Dr. Arul Chinnaiyan, S.P. Hicks Endowed Professor of Pathology and professor of urology, Medical School.

• James Hackett, vice chairman, Steelcase Inc., and U-M alumnus.

• Dr. Michael Johns, professor, School of Medicine and Public Health, Emory University, and interim executive vice president for medical affairs, U-M (effective June 2).

• Janet Larson, professor of nursing and chair of the Department of Acute, Critical and Long Term Care, interim chair of the Division of Health Promotion and Risk Reduction, School of Nursing.

• Martin Philbert, dean, School of Public Health; professor of toxicology, Department of Environmental Health Sciences, SPH.

• Alan Saltiel, Mary Sue Coleman Director of the Life Sciences Institute.

• Sue Schade, chief information officer, U-M Hospitals and Health Centers.

• Cynthia Wilbanks, vice president for government relations.

Lisa M. Connolly, senior manager for executive searches, Office of the President, will serve as the president’s liaison to the search.
