Provost Martha Pollack has appointed an advisory committee to search for a new dean of the School of nursing. The search process already has begun.
Carol Boyd, Deborah J. Oakley Collegiate Professor of Nursing and professor of nursing, School of Nursing; professor of women’s studies, LSA; research professor, Psychiatry Department, Medical School; and research professor, Institute for Research on Women and Gender, is chairing the committee that has been charged with conducting a broad search and presenting a slate of recommended candidates.
In an email to faculty and staff at the school, Pollack wrote that Dean Kathleen Potempa would step down during the 2015-16 academic year, after 10 years of service.
Additional members of the search committee include:
• Hassan Abbas, Bachelor of Science in Nursing student (’17), Shipman Society Scholar, Nursing Student Government.
• Cynthia Arslanian-Engoren, associate professor of nursing and director of faculty affairs and development, School of Nursing.
• Jane Barnsteiner, U-M School of Nursing alumna; professor emerita, School of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania.
• Debra Barton, Mary Lou Willard French Professor of Nursing, professor of nursing, School of Nursing; and professor of psychiatry, Medical School.
• Margaret Calarco, senior associate director and chief of nursing services, U-M Health System.
• James Dalton, dean and professor of pharmaceutical sciences, College of Pharmacy.
• Christopher Friese, assistant professor of nursing, assistant research scientist, School of Nursing.
• Bonnie Hagerty, associate professor of nursing and associate dean of undergraduate studies, School of Nursing.
• Dr. Lori Pierce, vice provost for academic and faculty affairs, Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs; and professor of radiation oncology, Medical School.
• Stephen Strobbe, clinical associate professor of nursing and specialty lead, Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing, School of Nursing and Medical School.
• Colleen Zimmerman, executive director of development and external relations, School of Nursing.
In her February email, Pollack said, “Potempa has led transformational change in the School of Nursing.”
“Dean Potempa built key partnerships with the U-M Health System and other regional health systems, giving students opportunities for research and the ability to influence nursing and health care in their clinical placements. Under her leadership, the school recruited talented junior faculty and highly accomplished senior faculty, which strengthened the clinical track by more closely integrating teaching, research, clinical nursing and health care practice.”
