Science and math boosters
Are you interested in tutoring a middle or high school student in math or science? How about offering some hands-on computer technology expertise? The Southeastern Michigan Math-Science Learning Coalition has students and teachers in Detroit, Pontiac, Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti who need your help.
Funded by the National Science Foundation and coordinated through the U-M Center for Ultrafast Optical Science, the Math-Science Learning Coalition brings together university, business, community and government resources to promote science literacy for children and teens. Last year, the coalition’s work was limited to the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area. Beginning this month, the program will expand to include Detroit and Pontiac schools and community organizations.
Using its World Wide Web site on the Internet, the coalition also distributes instructions for simple science lessons and experiments, a list of volunteers called “wandering wizards” who will give hands-on science demonstrations to school groups.
