School of Music performances blossom in cold November
The School of Music will provide a feast for the eyes and ears this week as it continues its plentiful November schedule of concerts, theater productions and recitals.
Tonight (Nov. 19) at 8 p.m. in Hill Auditorium, Theodore Morrison conducts a free, public performance of Handel’s epic oratorio, Israel in Egypt. At 8 p.m. Wed. (Nov. 20), Tania Miller will conduct the 60-member Campus Band, in a program including works by Donald Coakley, Gustav Holst and Norman Dello Joio. Opera Workshop students will perform “An Evening of Venetian Song: A Tribute to La Fenice” at 7:30 p.m. Thurs. (Nov. 21) in the Museum of Art. The Theatre and Drama Department production of Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts will take the stage at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre at 8 p.m. Thurs.-Sat. (Nov. 23) and at 2 p.m. Sun. (Nov. 24). Tickets are $14 and $18.
Kicking off the weekend will be a performance at 8 p.m. Fri. (Nov. 22) in Hill Auditorium by the Symphony and Concert bands, in a program that includes music by Virgil Thompson, Persichetti and Ingolf Dahl. Also on Friday is “Viola Fest,” at 8 p.m. in the School of Music Recital Hall. Yizhak Schotten, professor of viola, and guest violist Steve Tenenbaum of the Orion String Quartet will perform J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 6, Brahms’ “Quintet in b minor, Op. 115” and more in the free, public concert. Tenenbaum also will give a guest Master Class at 10 a.m. Sat. (Nov. 23) at McIntosh Theatre.
Sat. at 8 p.m. the Digital Music Ensemble will bring a multi-media/theatrical production of Babar the Elephant to the Media Union Video Studio. The ensemble’s fall concert is a “non-linear deconstruction” of the children’s story, using music of Poulenc, Crumb, Stravinsky and Victor Young, who wrote for the Ringling Brothers’ Circus. The free, public performance is not intended for young children.
The Michigan Youth Ensembles—the Symphony Orchestra, Band, Chamber Singera and Women’s Chorale—will showcase the best high school musicians from throughout the state in a concert at 7 p.m. Mon. (Nov. 25) in Hill Auditorium. Also on Monday, Martin Katz, “accompanist to the stars,” will give a faculty recital at 8 p.m. in the Recital Hall, School of Music; and the Composers Forum Concert will take place at 8 p.m. in the McIntosh Theatre.
